Medicare and Prescription Drug Coverage Information sources:
- Two resources from Health and Human Services can help caregivers and those who work with them to understand the changes in Medicare and prescription drug coverage. The “Medicare-Approved Drug Discount Card Tip Sheet” (Pub. # 11071) and “Guide to Choosing a Medicare-Approved Drug Discount Card” (Pub. # 11062) can be obtained by going to www.medicare.gov. Printed copies are also available by calling (800) MEDICARE.
- The California HealthCare Foundation has released a new web-based resource, 2004 Guide to California Medicare Options. The guide includes information on the recent changes to Medicare and rates every Medicare HMO in California for overall and prescription drug value. To get a copy, go to www.CalMedicareOptions.org
Recently updated, The Guide to Medi-Cal Programs is an easy-to-use reference describing programs and eligibility requirements. A Medi-Cal orientation covering immigration, disability, the application process and services is also covered, and an Aid Code Quick Reference Guide is included. Home Made Money: A Consumer’s Guide to Reverse Mortgages from AARP details how reverse mortgages can help elders stay in their homes, as well as alternative options that may better meet an elder’s needs. The guide can be obtained through www.aarp.org/revmort or by calling (888) OUR-AARP. AARP also has a loan calculator on the website to help people determine how much money might be available to them.
Since You Care: Adult Day Care, a free brochure from Metlife Mature Market Institute, offers caregivers and older adults insight into services provided by adult day centers (ADC) and how to find the right center for a loved one. The brochure also contains an evaluation form to help compare centers and a listing of websites and resources that may provide assistance. AARP and the National Alliance on Caregiving have released a new report, Caregiving in the U.S., which provides national statistics about caregivers. The study included 1,247 caregivers who were defined as 18 years of age or older, living in the U.S. and providing assistance with one or more ADLs or IADLs for someone 18 years of age or older. The National Alliance for Caregiving and the United Hospital Fund have released a Spanish version of A Family Caregiver’s Guide to Hospital Discharge Planning. The publication is available free at www.caregiving.org/FamDisPlanEsp.pdf; printed copies are also available.
