Does your loved one need additional assistance with prescription drugs? The Social Security Administration (SSA) and Medicare have joined together to identify those eligible for assistance in paying for medications, but who may not yet have applied for help.
Invitations to apply for these benefits will be sent out by SSA this spring and summer. Individuals over the age of 65 who receive MediCal or Medicaid do not have to fill out the application.
If your loved one receives a letter and application from the Social Security Administration, you may assist him or her in applying for the benefit. Applications can be mailed in, completed over the telephone, presented in person at a local SSA branch, or submitted over the SSA website at www.ssa.gov (after July 1, 2005). Telephone assistance for potential beneficiaries is available in multiple languages. Correspondence regarding the application will be in English, and translated only into Spanish.
It is important to also remember that decision letters regarding eligibility will be sent only to the beneficiary and will not be directed to the individual assisting with the application. After applying for the benefit, keep an eye on your loved one’s mailbox for a response. If you have additional questions, contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213 or (800) 325-0778 (TTY).
