Reverse Mortgages Can Help Some Older People Afford Long-Term Care at Home A new study by the National Council on the Aging (NCOA) finds that almost half of the country’s 28 million homes with somebody 62 years or older are good candidates for a reverse mortgage as a means for financing their long-term care. Under a reverse mortgage, qualifying individuals 62 or older receive cash for their home and then live in it until they are no longer able. NCOA’s report, A National Blueprint for Increasing the Use of Reverse Mortgages in Long-Term Care is available at www.ncoa.org.

AARP has a useful page on their website devoted to reverse mortgages. The page features articles describing how reverse mortgages work, a Reverse Mortgage Calculator, and other options which can provide financial assistance to older people. For more information go to www.aarp.org/revmort/.
