Are you a health or service provider interested in integrating caregiver assessment into your work with caregiving families, older people and adults with disabilities? The National Center on Caregiving at FCA is pleased to announce the release of a new practical resource to promote the assessment of caregiver needs in health and long-term care settings.
Caregivers Count Too! - A Toolkit to Help Practitioners Assess the Needs of Family Caregivers is targeted toward health and social service practitioners and program administrators. The toolkit provides a compilation of materials and techniques to facilitate the implementation of a caregiver assessment in a variety of service delivery settings.
Building on the work of the National Consensus Development Conference for Caregiver Assessment, convened by FCA in September 2005, Caregivers Count Too! was developed to serve two purposes:
-
Sharpen health and service practitioners' awareness of caregivers as an at-risk population, whose own needs should be determined by an assessment; and
-
Add to practitioners' knowledge and skills, helping to equip them to develop and implement an appropriate caregiver assessment process in practice settings. Fundamental principles and practice guidelines resulting from the National Consensus Development Conference are incorporated throughout all sections of the toolkit.
The toolkit is divided into user-friendly sections which explain the key role of family caregivers and the need for integrating an assessment of their needs in health and long-term care as well as a set of basic guidelines for conducting caregiver assessment practices. These guidelines include: recommended areas to cover and questions to include in a caregiver assessment and answers to the “who, when, where and by whom” questions for implementing caregiver assessment. Additional resources are also provided, such as a directory of organizations specializing in caregiver issues, six sample caregiver assessment tools, an annotated list of FCA publications relating to caregiver assessment and an annotated bibliography of caregiver assessment materials and journal articles.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provided primary support for this project with additional support from the Archstone Foundation and The California Endowment.
