TWO NEW PHONE WORKSHOPS HELP FAMILIES
RING IN NATIONAL FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH IN NOVEMBER

SAN FRANCISCO–Families caring for a chronically ill or disabled loved one are invited to pick up their phones and celebrate National Family Caregivers Month with two free TeleCaregiving Workshops sponsored by Family Caregiver Alliance and California’s Caregiver Resource Centers. These telephone workshops make it easy to learn practical skills from expert instructors and enjoy the company of other caregivers without having to leave the comfort or convenience of your home or office. All you need is a phone!

WHO:
California caregivers and family members of someone diagnosed with a chronic or disabling health condition.

WORKSHOP TOPICS:

HERE BUT NOT HERE—FINDING HOPE WHEN A LOVED ONE HAS MEMORY LOSS

Date/Time: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 from 11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
Speaker: Pauline Boss, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota, therapist, and author.
Description: Families caring for relatives with disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease or traumatic brain injury often feel sad as they see loved ones lose their memory and the capacity to care for themselves. Dr. Boss calls this sadness “frozen grief,” or “ambiguous loss.” Learn how to build resiliency and hope as you live with loss that is unclear and seems to have no ending.

PREVENTING PROBLEMS WITH MEDICATIONS: SAFE AND COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS

Date/Time: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 from 11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
Speaker: Richard “Ron” Finley, B.S. Pharm., R.Ph. Lecturer, Department of Clinical Pharmacy, UCSF School of Pharmacy.
Description: Caregivers can play a key role in managing cost-effective drug therapy that is safe and effective. Learn the basics on safe use of medications; symptoms associated with a medication-related problem; how a pharmacist can help minimize adverse drug reactions; and sure-fire ways to save money on drug bills.
