El Portal

El Portal is an outreach program of the Alzheimer's Association aiming to build partnerships in the Latino community.

Organization:

Alzheimer's Association

The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research.

Location:

Los Angeles, CA

How does it work?

Originally implemented by the Alzheimer's Association chapter in Los Angeles, the El Portal project brought together agencies with technical understanding of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, with ethnic-based community agencies with expertise in cultural competence. These two groups of partners formed Dementia Care Networks to provide the Latino community with an array of community services for persons with Alzheimer's disease and their families.

El Portal offers a replication manual (Dementia Care Network Replication Manual) for professionals and community organizations interested in replicating the intervention.

Why is it successful?

El Portal has been replicated and evaluated extensively. Results from evaluations of service utilization indicate a reduction in barriers to care and an increase in services utilization. Psychological, emotional, and financial stress associated with caregiving was alleviated.
