Cuidando con Respeto

Cuidando con Respeto is a culturally appropriate psychoeducational Spanish language training program for Latino family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) serves San Antonio and the 50,000 square-mile area of South Texas. UTHSCSA is a designated Hispanic serving institution. The Department of Family and Community Medicine provides accessible, comprehensive, high quality and personal health care that is respectful of our patient's time, beliefs, and values.

How does it work?

The well known evidence based intervention, Savvy Caregiver Program, was adapted by a UTHSCSA team into a culturally relevant curriculum for Spanish speaking caregivers. The adapted program was named Cuidando con Respeto. The Cuidando curriculum takes a family centered approach, incorporating interactive learning activities by which caregivers can exchange experiences and learn strategies for interaction with family members with Alzheimer's disease.

Why is it successful? To date almost 350 individual and groups of family caregivers have participated in the program. Evaluations to date show an overwhelming positive response from caregivers.
