FCA Announces Awardees of the Rosalinde Gilbert Innovations in Alzheimer's Disease Caregiving Legacy Award

Four exceptional programs from California, New York, North Carolina and Washington are this year's recipients of the Rosalinde Gilbert Innovations in Alzheimer's Disease Caregiving Legacy Awards. The awarded programs are administrated by the following organizations: Songwriting Works Educational Foundation, Alzheimer's Association California Southland Chapter, Alzheimer's Foundation of America, and Mountain Projects, Inc.


Organized by the National Center on Caregiving at Family Caregiver Alliance and sponsored by The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation, this year marks the third year of the Awards that recognize excellence in Alzheimer's care and caregiver support in three categories: Creative Expression; Diverse & Multicultural Communities; and Policy & Advocacy.


The programs are awarded $20,000 each and will be honored at a reception at Aging in America, the Annual Conference of the American Society on Aging in San Francisco on April 28, 2011 from 5:30-7:30 pm. Apps Design to Assist Caregivers

A recent article by Anya Martin in The Wall Street Journal focused on the challenges faced by older adult children who are taking care of an aging relative and the introduction of new affordable apps that are designed to assist the busy caregiver. The author explains how the tech market has seen an increase of growing smartphone apps that are designed to assist caregivers in tracking their care recipient's medical appointments, medication management, and other caregiving related responsibilities. The Healthy Living Innovation Awards is an opportunity for organizations to showcase their effective health promotion efforts for improving the well-being and health of the community they serve. Health And Human Services Revises Rule For Hospital Visiting Procedures

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced a final rule mandating that hospitals have written policies and procedures explaining to all patients their right to choose who may visit them during their inpatient stay as well as their right to withdraw consent for visitation at any time. The rules mean that patients will have the right to choose their own visitors during a hospital stay, including a visitor who is a same-sex domestic partner. The rules update the Conditions of Participation that all Medicare and Medicaid- participating hospitals and critical access hospitals must meet. Read more...

 

New Report Explores AAA's Readiness To Serve LGBT Seniors

A recent report "Ready to Serve: The Aging Network and LGB and T Older Adults" provides a glimpse into the Aging Network's experience and readiness to serve the LGBT senior community. Respondents from 45 states and regions nationwide participated in the May 2010 study that interviewed directors of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and directors of State Units on Aging.

New Website Addresses Workplace Flexibility

The Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College recently launched a website focused on workplace flexibility. Workplace flexibility (or lack thereof) is an issue faced by many family caregivers and this website provides information for employees and employers, including case studies, types of flexibility, challenges in implementing flexibility in the workplace, and the benefits of flexibility for employees and employers. Senate Special Committee On Aging Holds Forum On Alzheimer's Disease

The Senate Special Committee on Aging held a forum on December 8, 2010, about Alzheimer's disease and its impact on families. Kathy Greenlee, the Assistant Secretary of the Administration on Aging (AoA), testified about programs to support caregivers who are caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease. AoA is currently working with 16 states to field test nine evidence-based caregiver interventions. Patricia Grady, the Director of the National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health, explained her agency's efforts to support the estimated 10.9 million caregivers who are serving patients with Alzheimer's. On January 10th, two studies were released that examined the role of technology and family caregiving. The studies, "Home Tweet Home: The Age Lesson Boomer Social Media Study" (Age Lessons) and "e-Connected Family Caregivers: Bringing Caregiving into the 21st Century" (UnitedHealthcare, National Alliance for Caregiving) looked at how caregivers look at social media and caregiver receptivity to technologies. "Home Tweet Home..." used a panel of identified baby boomer caregivers who had visited at least one caregiver sites to determine how they used their time on the web.

ARCH Selects Four States to Host Lifespan Respite Summits
Last fall, ARCH solicited applications from collaborative partnerships between state government agencies, state respite coalitions/organizations, and Aging and Disability Resource Centers to hold statewide Lifespan Respite Summits in states that do not yet have a federal Lifespan Respite Grant and have not previously held an ARCH-sponsored Summit. The purpose of the summit is to bring together diverse public and private groups and family caregivers with similar respite interests to learn about the federal Lifespan Respite program, states' best practices, building state respite coalitions, and to help assist the state in planning its own Lifespan Respite system. AoA Plans to Release FY 11 Lifespan Respite Program Announcement in Early Spring

The next program announcement for available grant funds for FY 2011 for the Lifespan Respite Program is expected to be released by the US Administration on Aging in early spring. Eligible state agencies include the agency which administers the Older Americans Act, the State Medicaid Agency, or an agency designated by the governor. Read more...

 

Lifespan Respite Care Program Reauthorization Input Requested

AoA is soliciting input for the reauthorization of the Lifespan Respite Care Program (LRCP). The LRCP was authorized by Congress in December 2006. In 2011, Congress will consider reauthorization of the LRCP effective in FY 2012. Read more... 


Wanted: A National Respite System

A recent blog post in the New York Times, The New Old Age, entitled Wanted: A National Respite System (December 31, 2010) by Karen Stabiner, highlighted the federally-funded Lifespan Respite program, bringing it new national attention. The especially compelling comments, many of them sharing personal caregiving stories about the value of respite, accompany the blog post. The Times continues to welcome your comments to the Post. The more comments that are received, the more likely it will be that the Times will continue to write about the need for respite.

The 2011 National Lifespan Respite Conference and Grantee Meeting will be held in Glendale, AZ, November 1-4, 2011. The conference will be hosted by the AZ Caregiver Coalition and the AZ Lifespan Respite Care Network in collaboration with the ARCH National Respite Network. The theme of the national conference is the Many Faces of Respite, celebrating cultural diversity among the nation's family caregivers and in the innovative delivery of respite services. The full conference will be preceded by a Pre-Conference Intensive, a State Summit on Lifespan Respite, on November 1, 2011. Read more...

Apps Design to Assist Caregivers

A recent article by Anya Martin in The Wall Street Journal focused on the challenges faced by older adult children who are taking care of an aging relative and the introduction of new affordable apps that are designed to assist the busy caregiver. The author explains how the tech market has seen an increase of growing smartphone apps that are designed to assist caregivers in tracking their care recipient's medical appointments, medication management, and other caregiving related responsibilities. Health And Human Services Revises Rule For Hospital Visiting Procedures

The rules mean that patients will have the right to choose their own visitors during a hospital stay, including a visitor who is a same-sex domestic partner. Hospitals are also required to explain in their written policies the circumstances under which the hospital may restrict patient access to visitors based on reasonable clinical needs.

New Report Explores AAA's Readiness To Serve LGBT Seniors

A recent report "Ready to Serve: The Aging Network and LGB and T Older Adults" provides a glimpse into the Aging Network's experience and readiness to serve the LGBT senior community. Respondents from 45 states and regions nationwide participated in the May 2010 study that interviewed directors of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and directors of State Units on Aging. Highlights from the report indicate that one-third of the agencies provided or funded some type of LGBT aging training to staff while only a few agencies were providing LGBT specific services and/or outreach.

ARCH Selects Four States to Host Lifespan Respite Summits

Last fall, ARCH solicited applications from collaborative partnerships between state government agencies, state respite coalitions/organizations, and Aging and Disability Resource Centers to hold statewide Lifespan Respite Summits in states that do not yet have a federal Lifespan Respite Grant and have not previously held an ARCH-sponsored Summit. The purpose of the summit is to bring together diverse public and private groups and family caregivers with similar respite interests to learn about the federal Lifespan Respite program, states' best practices, building state respite coalitions, and to help assist the state in planning its own Lifespan Respite system. AoA Plans to Release FY 11 Lifespan Respite Program Announcement in Early Spring

The next program announcement for available grant funds for FY 2011 for the Lifespan Respite Program is expected to be released by the US Administration on Aging in early spring. If you are interested in having your state apply for funding, it is never too early to prepare by building partnerships and compiling the necessary information. To help you get started, visit the ARCH National Respite Network and its Technical Assistance Center on Lifespan Respite for a Toolkit on Lifespan Respite, and to view Webinars "Lifespan Respite 101" or "Tools for Collaboration." Lifespan Respite Care Program Reauthorization Input Requested

AoA is soliciting input for the reauthorization of the Lifespan Respite Care Program (LRCP). The LRCP was authorized by Congress in December 2006. In 2011, Congress will consider reauthorization of the LRCP effective in FY 2012. In anticipation of this process, AoA is soliciting input concerning the reauthorization via the AoA web site at http://www.aoa.gov/AoAroot/AoA_Programs/HCLTC/LRCP/Reauthorization/Index.aspx.

AoA encourages anyone who wants to provide input into the reauthorization of the Program to submit their ideas and suggestions. The deadline for submission of input is March 31, 2011.
