New Medicare Resources:

  • Medicare beneficiaries who suffer from Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor disorder are now eligible for deep brain stimulation, a cutting-edge therapy that implants electrodes to stop tremors and uncontrollable movements.   • A new Center for Medicare Education brief “Medicare and Durable Medical Equipment” discusses Medicare coverage for equipment like wheelchairs and hospital beds. It’s available at: http://www.medicareed.org/pdfs/papers91.pdf.
  • The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services has released “Medicare Basics: A Guide for Caregivers.” The 23-page booklet addresses Medicare coverage and prescription drugs, home health, and nursing home care. To view the booklet click here.

Administration on Aging has released new documents related to Caregiving Resources for the Aging Network. Included in the documents is “A Compendium of HHS Caregiver Support Activities,” a catalog of all the national programs to support family caregivers, funded under the Department of Health and Human Services. The Choices Bank is an online repository to make advance directives available anytime so people can find them when they need them. This free web-based service allows people to deposit their advance directive with the organization and can view, print, or revise the directive as well.

Transportation Solutions for Caregivers (TSC) is a new toolkit developed by Easter Seals for family caregivers who regularly drive with older adults who have cognitive and/or physical impairments. The toolkit includes an informational booklet and a 14- minute video illustrating common challenges of day-to-day transportation, such as difficulty getting into/out of a vehicle, providing physical assistance (e.g., wheelchair transfers and proper body mechanics) and dealing with dementia-related behaviors

Consumers Union and the California HealthCare Foundation have released the updated 2003 Guide to California Medicare HMOs, which provides comparative information on every Medicare HMO plan in Califiornia, including premiums, copayments, and prescription drug coverage. It is a free tool for people thinking about joining or switching Medicare HMOs and people who help Medicare consumers make those decisions. Find it at www.calmedicarehmos.org.
