1. Georgia summary of 2003 programs and services

"State Fiscal Year 2003 Division of Aging Services: Just the Facts" highlights the accomplishments of Georgia's Aging programs and touches on identified future goals critical to the development of service options. 2. Hawaii posts summary of caregiver-related legislation

The Hawaii Executive Office on Aging has compiled a list of state legislation affecting family caregivers in the state and the status of each initiative. Bills include measures that would provide for financial incentives (H.B. 2110/S.B. 2225; H.B. 2113/H.B. 2571); respite care (H.B. 2708/S.B. 3037); and consumer direction (H.B. 2107/S.B. 2258). Read:

3. Massachusetts expands availability of in-home services

Massachusetts Governor Romney has announced the implementation of "Helping Our Massachusetts Elders (HOME)." This new program aims to provide alternatives to nursing home care. The HOME program has two components: a new $4 million trust fund to support programs that enable elders to remain in their own homes or congregate community housing and a voluntary managed care program that emphasizes preventive care to keep seniors out of hospitals and nursing homes. 4. Sen. Snowe introduces tax deduction for home care

U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) has introduced legislation (S. 2029) to create a tax deduction for home health care and adult day respite care expenses. Eligible families must provide care for a dependent with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. Details:

5. Connecting caregivers with services through physicians

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging has made available resources from "Making the Link: Connecting Caregivers with Services through Physicians." The project is designed to strengthen the ability of Area Agencies on Aging and Native American aging programs to serve family caregivers through a local, state and national campaign that will directly involve physicians in identifying caregivers and referring them to National Family Caregiver Support Program services. Available publications include a "getting started" technical assistance web-based seminar, national project presentations and other related materials. View:

6. Caregivers of persons with a brain tumor

The March 2004 edition of Nurse Inquiry includes "Caregivers of persons with a brain tumor: a conceptual model." This article describes a conceptual framework for providing care for a person with a primary malignant brain tumor. The demands of this particular care situation are described, as well as potential resources available to the caregiver to meet those demands. Finally, the stress response that results from the balance between care demands and caregiver resources is illustrated. Abstract:

7. African American women informal caregivers

"Empowering African American women informal caregivers: a literature synthesis and practice strategies" is included in the January 2004 edition of the Journal of Social Work. According to the authors "the article discusses two realities of African American women caregivers' experiences (strong coping and vulnerability) and two relevant theoretical frameworks (stress and coping and empowerment frameworks) for framing these experiences. Drawing on empowerment and other relevant literature, the authors recommend three practice strategies with these caregivers." Journal information:

8. End-of-life & palliative care conference addresses caregiving

The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization will hold their 19th annual conference "Creating Pathways for Care at the End of Life" from September 30 - October 2, 2004 in Washington, D.C. Innovative service delivery in caregiver support will be one focus area of the conference. Details:

9. 2004 annual Southwest conference on disability

"Creating Common Ground" will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico from September 29 - October 1, 2004. The deadline to submit abstracts is May 1, 2004. The conference will target people with disabilities; researchers; family members; service providers; disability advocates; staff of federal, state and local government agencies and students from the southwest. 10. USA Today articles spotlight caregiving

The February 17, 2004 edition of USA Today included two major stories by Janet Kornblum highlighting the challenges facing many family caregivers. "Sons, daughters and caregivers" and "Caregivers finding someone to lean on" explore the experiences of several families caring for loved ones and also examines the important role that support services can play. 11. Family practitioners are an important resource for caregivers

The American Academy of Family Physicians has devoted an online article to family caregiver issues. "Caring for America's aging population: FPs connect millions of family caregivers with much-needed services" explores ways in which family practitioners can learn more about caregiving issues and connect families with support services. 12. Webcast on Alzheimer's disease and caregiving

The Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative has launched Health Politics, a new weekly webcast devoted to analysis of healthcare policy issues.  Included in the series is "The Hidden Costs of Caring for an Alzheimer's Patient." This webcast covers a variety of issues, but has a particular focus on the role of caregivers.
