1. Texas report on Alzheimer's disease

The Texas Council on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders has made available their 2002 Biennial Report. The report includes background information on the council's activities, as well as research and advocacy efforts. Read the report: http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/alzheimers/biennial.pdf

2. Florida expands consumer-directed care

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has approved a Florida proposal to expand their consumer-directed care program, funded through Medicaid. Under the program, consumers and their families have a high level of involvement in service delivery, including hiring, firing and training direct care workers. The consumer-directed care program is part of the federal Independence Plus initiative. For more details:

3. NCC posts new summary of state caregiver initiatives

The National Center on Caregiving (NCC) at Family Caregiver Alliance has updated the state-by-state list of caregiver legislation. Nineteen states have caregiver-related legislation pending in their legislatures. Measures range from respite care funding in Hawaii (H.B. 226/S.B. 953) to paid family leave (S.B. 44) in Missouri. 4. Presidents fiscal year 2004 budget released

President Bush has released his fiscal year 2004 budget. For the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) and most other Administration on Aging programs, the President has recommended flat funding. 5. AoA town hall listening sessions

The U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA) is conducting a series of town hall listening sessions with members of the Aging Services Network. The sessions will address issues of empowerment, building on the success of the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) and service delivery innovations. 6. Alzheimer's Association study on state initiatives

The Alzheimer's Association has released "State Policy Clearinghouse, State Review 2002." The report provides a detailed account of long-term care initiatives in the states. States adopted policies ranging from dementia training funds in Georgia to universal long-term care coverage in Hawaii. 7. CDC develops TBI toolkit

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has developed a physician tool kit to improve clinical diagnosis and management of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The free kit includes practical, easy-to-use clinical information, patient information in English and Spanish, scientific literature and a CD-ROM. 8. Law center report on dependent care tax credits

The National Women's Law Center has developed an informational booklet on the various tax credits that can assist in the high costs of providing long-term care for a loved one in the home. In addition to the child care tax credit, the report details how to claim the dependent care tax credit and the Dependent Care Assistance Program, both of which can help those who are caring for a disabled spouse or parent. 9. "Caring for Someone with Alzheimer's"

The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living have co-authored "Caring for Someone with Alzheimer's." 10. Assistive technology and personal assistance

The February 2003 edition of the American Journal of Public Health includes, "Does Assistive Technology Substitute for Personal Assistance Among the Disabled Elderly?" 13. Archstone Foundation awards

The Gerontological Health Section of the American Public Health Association will be accepting nominations for its 2003 Archstone Foundation Award for Excellence in Program Innovation. The criteria for award selection will include: creativity in project design; documented outcomes and benefits of the program; replication potential; and, dissemination strategy.
