BAI Native American
Outreach Program
The BAI Native American Outreach
Program was established to increase
awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and
related dementias among the Arizona
Native American (NA) tribal members
and health care providers.The program’s
goals are to improve diagnosis and
treatment and to assist caregivers with
the challenges of caregiving. Outreach
to tribes and an annual conference have
reached over 1,500 family and profes-
sional caregivers. A DVD featuring three
Native American families sharing their
unique caregiving stories has
been widely distributed and used
along with a 55-page culturally
appropriate book, Navigating
through Memory Loss.
“. . . recognition by the Gilbert Foundation serves as a re-
minder of the importance of bringing culturally sensitive and appropriate outreach and edu-
cation programs to our Native American population . . . [a group that] continues to be one of
the most underserved and underrepresented relative to dementia.” - Jan Dougherty, MS, RN,
Director; and Filmer Lalio, MEd, Native American Outreach Coordinator.
