2009 Winner, Policy & Advocacy: San Francisco Department of
Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) - San Francisco, CA
The San Francisco Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) funds and coordinates services to
older adults, and adults with disabilities and their families to maximize self-sufficiency, safety, health, and
independence so persons can remain living in the community as long as possible and maintain the high-
est quality of life. DAAS facilitates the 37-member Long Term Care Coordinating Council whose policy

Panel’s key accomplishment was to
establish an innovative 11-year Strategic
Plan with the overall goal of averting the
growing crisis in long-term dementia care
and its negative impacts. Along with the

policymakers, caregivers, care
receivers, service providers and
the general public. The day-long
Summit held in San Francisco (July
2009), was organized collaboratively
by DAAS, Mental Health Association,
and Family Caregiver Alliance, for fam-
ily caregivers, providers, and media as
well as to engage the larger community.
“Receiving the Gilbert Award allowed us to begin implementation of the San Francisco Al-
zheimers Strategic Plan. The Gilbert Award was a critical factor in leveraging additional
funds. We are two years into our implementation and are having enormous success. Thank
