2008 Winner, Diverse/Multicultural Communities:
Taos Jewish Center’s Chesed Project - Taos, NM
Based on the ideal of neighbor helping neighbor, The Taos Jewish Center’s Chesed Project promotes so-
cial, physical and emotional connection, and helps support independence, interaction, and joy for people
over 60 in Taos County. The Chesed Project’s goal is to improve quality of life by providing activities such
as song, dance and yoga to encourage constituents to reach their full human and spiritual potential.

Program:
Apoyos Para Los Cuida-
dores
Apoyos Para Los Cuidadores (sup-
port for the caregivers), offers a
monthly support group for caregiv-
ers of the memory-impaired. Art-
streams: From the Well of Memory
are monthly interactive art discus-
sions for the memory impaired and
their caregivers that take place at
museums. A Resource Library pro-
vides education and information on
age-related issues. Participants are
residents of Taos County and neigh-
boring villages including Taos Pueblo
and come from rural, low income
and diverse communities (predomi-
nantely Latino). Fifty-eight percent
of Taos residents are Hispanic or
Latino.
